José Nambo

José Nambo began his involvement with Mariposas in 2014 with the inaugural cohort. He has served as Mariposas coordinator since then, and as a facilitator. Currently, José is a fifth grade teacher at Frank Porter Graham Elementary, a dual language school in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School district. Before that, he was a district and school administrator, a teacher in Wake County, NC, and a teacher in the Chicago Public Schools.

José was born in Michoacán, Mexico and raised in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago.  He has been living and working in the Chapel Hill and Durham area for 16 years.  His passion includes working with students and families to ensure they achieve all benefits and opportunities that come from civic ownership.  

José has a B.A. in History from the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, a Master’s Degree in Urban Education from Columbia College Chicago, and a Master’s Degree in School Administration from North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina.
